We’re Forced To Learn By Ourselves

I’m sure that you’ve already heard people saying, “don’t worry, they will eventually learn how to do this/that.” People can try their very best to guide us on how to do something, but we’re extremely stubborn and we try to do it our way at the end of the day.

You can’t always have someone breathing down your neck 24/7 on what to say, what to do, or how to act. They’re not your advisor unless you pay them to be, or they’re the superior in the company you work at. They’ll get exhausted for trying to continuously help guide you while you’re plain out blatantly rejecting their guidance.

Each one of us has our way of thinking, reacting, and executing. Sometimes it’s good to take someone’s advice, but sometimes some people can come on too strong and it feels like they’re just shoving a tablespoon of information down your throat.

Oh, I went through this and that before, don’t do it so, do it like this instead. Blah, blah, blah. I’m sure that you know what I’m talking about. It’s so much someone can say or do. We’re all different, just because option one worked out for you, it doesn’t mean it will work out for me.

We all go through trials in life, and there’s no easy way out of a situation, we all learn from our mistakes, or we are forced to learn when it’s time to do something.

In December 2020, I went on a shopping spree, literally! In a matter of fewer than two weeks, I’ve managed to spend nearly TTD 2,000.00 on fast food alone! I tell you, it’s like every morning I gotta have Starbucks for breakfast, plus in between lunch and dinner, it’s either pizza or fried chicken that’s on the way to my workplace. I would say that the delivery fee was a lot! It was like TTD 15.00 for my area and it reached a point where all the workers and drivers at these outlets know me by heart. I was like living the dream until I swiped my card and it said declined. Later that day when I called the bank, they informed me that my savings account was locked due to suspicious activity and when I checked my statement, it was in the thousands! I just realized that I went crazy and just wasted all this money on stuff that barely benefited me, but benefited my Instagram feed with likes.

I then took a step back and realized that it’s time that I begin to save, budget and I don’t want to say ration, but it’s Trinidad and Tobago that I live in, so ration.

So, from spending all this ridiculous amount of money, I’m now spending approximately TTD 9.00 for a candy bar at my local grocery store every two to three days just to treat myself to something special. And boy, I look forward to that nougat, almonds, chocolate, and caramel in that candy bar.

So my point is to live off of a candy bar instead of your regular dhal puri roti and curry chicken. I’m kidding, my actual point is that no matter how much time people warned me on spending my money on unnecessary and irrelevant things, it’s up to me to learn on my own because we all learn from our mistakes. We all learn from the past; we learn on our own and I’m sure that I’ve got more learning to do soon whether it’s about my finances, relationships, or my employment. I’m a human being and nobody is perfect.

I might not be where I want to be yet, but I get closer every day because I am just striving to be a rainbow when a thunderstorm ends.
